Mobidia Announces Availability of Transport Layer Optimization

Mobidia’s new product allows carriers to optimize data networks to more efficiently maximize network resources and enhance subscribers’ experience.

Vancouver, BC,   February 02, 2010 --(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Today, Mobidia Technology, Inc., an innovative provider of mobile data solutions for increasing efficiency and manageability of networks, announced the availability of the Mobidia Transport Optimization Solution.

The transport-layer solution offers a fundamental optimization tool to wireless operators for managing network congestion caused by the rapid growth of mobile data. By optimizing the transport layer, Mobidia addresses inherent limitations of wireless networks as well as inefficiencies introduced by the transmission control protocol (TCP). As a result, Mobidia provides the following benefits:
  • A demonstrated and proven ability to recover 15 to 30 percent network capacity during “busy hours” under peak network conditions
  • Acceleration of all TCP data sessions on both the downlink and uplink streams
  • More consistent and faster connection speeds to enhance subscribers’ activities such as Web browsing and video streaming

Because optimization is achieved through acceleration and the solution is deployed at the transport layer, Mobidia offers complimentary and accretive benefits to other optimization solutions – including client and server-based content compression, trans-coding and content adaptation and caching. Also, due to Mobidia’s unique approach, which does not apply the use of any "tunneling", session aggregation, or content manipulation techniques, optimization can be achieved without any negative impact to quality of service (QoS) implementations, policy servers or deep packet inspection (DPI) solutions.

"With the growing stress globally on mobile networks from an amazing increase in data usage over the last 12 months, wireless operators need to use many different technologies to optimize networks and manage traffic loads," said Mobidia CTO and Vice President of Engineering Lawrence Chee. "Optimizing the transport layer often is overlooked, but can provide significant efficiency gains and should be included as a key component of any network management strategy. Mobidia's transport optimization was designed to be deployed transparently, so it provides truly additive benefits to other optimization solutions."

Evaluation Licenses Available Today

Mobidia's Transport Layer Optimization solution represents the first implementation of its network-edge intelligence platform that leverages the distributed power of smartphones and connected laptops to increases network efficiency and management. With this solution, Mobidia suddenly changes the impact of these devices on the network. Now these data hungry devices, which are driving data growth, can be part of the solution to address congestion.

Mobidia's platform will also enhance policy engines to implement new, differentiated services and subscriber-based data plans. It also provides detailed reporting systems with a more comprehensive set of network intelligence to give operators a better sense of how, when and who is consuming data services.

Evaluation licenses of the Mobidia's Transport Optimization Solution are available for wireless operators today. The base solution supports up to 10GB data throughput and can scale up to meet most data throughput requirements. The Mobidia solution is network agnostic and has been proven to deliver efficiency gains on 2.5G, 3G and 3.5G networks, including HSPA and HSPA+ networks.

Support for Windows laptops with embedded or USB modem connectivity is available immediately and support for OSX, and a range of smartphone platforms will be available later in 2010. Additionally, later in 2010 Mobidia will provide a software update to include layer-4 compression, which will further increase the additive impact of the solution on network efficiency while maintaining its transparency and compatibility with existing network elements and technologies.

About Mobidia Technology Inc.

Mobidia provides operators with a revolutionary software platform that makes mobile data networks more efficient and more profitable by introducing network-edge intelligence. Leveraging the distributed computing power of millions of connected laptops, netbooks and smartphones, the solution increases network efficiencies and enhances subscriber and service policy solutions with a transport layer platform approach. The solution seamlessly interfaces with other vendors' optimization, traffic management and policy solutions and is fully transparent to both subscribers' services and applications and the network’s existing core elements. This layer-4 transport optimization technology has consistently demonstrated an ability to recover 15 to 30 percent network capacity at peak times on networks across the globe.
