With Mobidia's Software, Network Congestion Will be Relieved by Harnessing the Collective, Distributed Power of Millions of Smartphones and Laptops

Mobidia enhances policy and DPI solutions with intelligence at the edge of the network, making the very devices that are creating network congestion, part of the strategies for addressing it

Vancouver, BC,   February 02, 2010 --(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Today, Mobidia Technology, Inc., an innovative provider of mobile data solutions for increasing efficiency and manageability of wireless data networks, announced the availability of client-based technology to enhance policy and deep packet inspection (DPI) solutions.

The ever growing consumption of mobile data is congesting networks around the world; and wireless operators are implementing a variety of strategies and network intelligence solutions to make networks more efficient and more manageable. Mobidia offers a unique, effective approach and a new set of tools to help counteract congestion by harnessing the source of the problem and leveraging the distributed power of millions of smartphones and laptops to push network intelligence and management out to the edge of the network.

Mobidia is working with the leading global suppliers of policy servers and DPI solutions to extend and increase the value and power that wireless operators can realize from these technologies. Incorporating network-edge intelligence can significantly increase efficiency, provide better subscriber experiences and enable carriers to create new differentiated tariff plans.

By extending policy and DPI solutions, Mobidia's software can deliver new value add to wireless operators in four important ways:
  1. Premium Service Delivery with Policy-based Optimization. Mobidia's transport layer optimization accelerates data sessions and increases the speed of delivering data to and from subscribers. For some activities, such as delivering video with adaptive rate shaping, Mobidia can increase bandwidth rates to deliver an enhanced experience to the subscriber. Paired with a policy engine, premium service experiences can be offered to a group of premium subscribers.
  2. Best-in-Class Differentiated Services with Uplink and Downlink Policy. Mobidia's software provides a new location – the user equipment – so the carrier can enforce policy. This software extends standard differentiated services strategies to include upstream as well as downstream traffic and enables more dynamic policy decisions. For example, differentiating and allocating network resources can be done only when or where the network is congested and fully loaded so that in less busy times resources can be used more freely by subscribers. Additionally, shaping and better management of the upstream can lead to increased performance of the downstream.
  3. Enhanced DPI. Mobidia's software can enhance both reporting and policy functionality delivered by DPI solutions. The software helps identify traffic types more efficiently and faster by characterizing traffic on the user equipment. It can also identify sources of traffic types, which is information that is not traditionally available to DPI, such as encrypted or some compressed data.
  4. Distributed DPI. By earlier identification of traffic types at the user equipment, Mobidia's solution can offload processing demands on the core DPI box, improving the scalability and performance of the solution.

"We believe software at the edge of the network can play a bigger role in helping to counter the demand for bandwidth," says Mobidia Vice President of Marketing Chris Hill. "Policy and DPI vendors can deliver more value to wireless operators and subscribers by leveraging intelligence at this location. Also the devices, infrastructure and networks have evolved to the point where extending network intelligence to smartphones and laptops is not only viable – it's absolutely necessary. What's really exciting is that the very devices that are creating congestion now can be part of the solution for addressing it."

Mobidia's solutions are now available to wireless operators, policy and DPI vendors for evaluation and adoption. With extensive experience with radio access networks (RAN), core network elements, operating systems, and smartphone and mobile device platforms, Mobidia's engineering team and resources are available for architectural and deployment discussions to provide a full understanding of how network-edge intelligence can be leveraged to enhance wireless data access and services.
